HE ONLY had on one sock, the other forgotten somewhere down the hall on his way to the computer, and his brain was fuzzy from a night spent reading Addieâs new copy of The Mystery of the Falling Star. At least now he could tell Brandon heâd actually read one of his momâs books, and it really wasnât bad at all.
âHey,â he said, sitting down in front of his computer and answering the call.
âUncle Tate!â she squealed excitedly. âDid you see her?â
He blushed, thinking about Brandon and the evening theyâd had together. âYep. I did. Andâ¦.â He bent down to get her new books from beside his desk, where heâd left them the night before. âI got you new ones!â
She screamed so loud he was pretty sure she was going to be responsible for blowing out his speakers. âYou got them for me! I canât believe it! I love you so much, Uncle Tate! So, so much!â
Feeling like he was the best uncle in the world was pretty awesome for sure. Sometimes heâd see a new exhibit at the zoo or at a museum or something and think of how much Addie would have loved to see it, then remember that it would likely be something completely different by the time they got back.
Tate was just about to say something when there was a knock on his front door. âOne second, Addie. Someoneâs at the door.â
âOkay, Uncle Tate. Hurry back so we can read together!â
Tate had promised heâd read her the first chapter of whatever book she chose the last time heâd sent her an e-mail, and he was pretty sure sheâd choose the newest book he picked up for her last night. Sheâd have to wait a while before the mail got it to her in Korea, but it was something they did together that he knew made her happy.
He went to the door and opened it, finding Brandon standing on his front porch.
âHey.â
âUhhh. Hi. Shit, did I forget you were coming over this early? Or is it already ten?â
Instead of being upset, Brandon just smiled. âItâs actually a little past ten. I was running a few minutes late, and I was hoping to take you to the Museum of Nature and Science today, but you might want to change out of your pajamas for that.â
âRight. Pants.â Tate shook his head, not believing he had screwed up the timing so badly. âCome in. Iâll just be a second. Actually, Iâm also on Skype with my niece, so I need to say good-bye to her too. So two seconds.â
Brandon didnât seem all that put out by it as Tate closed the door behind him and headed back to the living room, where he leaned over in front of his computer screen. âAddie, honey, I need to go. I have a date.â
She, on the other hand, was instantly pouty in the way only ten-year-old girls can be. âBut you have a date with me! And I want you to read me the first chapter of Spidersilk Bridge like you promised.
